GIANT ASIAN (Hierodula membranacea)
The Giant Asian Mantis (Hierodula membranacea) is one of the largest and most impressive mantis species available in the pet trade. Native to tropical regions of Asia, this species is known for its bright green coloration, strong build, and impressive size — females can reach up to 4 inches (10 cm) in length.
Care & Enclosure Requirements
Enclosure:
A well-ventilated enclosure at least 3x the mantis’s body length in height is recommended to allow proper molting. For adults, a terrarium around 20x20x30 cm (8x8x12 inches) works well. Mesh or cross-ventilation is important to prevent stagnant air.
Temperature:
Ideal temperatures range between 24–30°C (75–86°F) during the day. They tolerate slight nighttime drops but thrive in consistently warm conditions.
Humidity:
Moderate humidity around 50–70% is ideal. Light misting 3–4 times per week helps with hydration and proper shedding.
Diet:
A strong feeder with an excellent hunting response — readily takes crickets, locusts, roaches, and flies. Larger nymphs and adults can handle appropriately sized prey with ease.
Hardy, fast-growing, and visually striking, the Giant Asian Mantis is perfect for beginners looking for a larger species and experienced keepers wanting an active, display-worthy predator in their collection.
